| Mountaineering
Instructions Windhorse
Trekking is a private enterprise with
a social approach. One of our objectives
is to provide quality high altitude
mountaineering instructions. Courses
are designed to instruct foreign climbers
and local climbing Sherpas with the
skills necessary to succeed in Himalaya
style climbing. We believe there is
no alpine environment that can compare
with the Nepal Himalaya for quality
mountaineering instruction. This is
due to the easily accessible training
areas just off the trail from some
of the most culturally rich treks
in the world. Our courses are a complete
and intensive introduction to mountaineering
among the most sought after and spiritual
mountains in the world .
By joining one of our multiple instructional
courses you will receive a thorough
course in high altitude mountaineering,
world-class trek amongst the Himalaya,
and help support a local climber in
receiving the training he/she deserves.
Due to local climbers ability to speak
English, we are able to put the western
and local climbers on the same course.
The presence of the local climbers
allows you to create a relationship
and deeper knowledge of their culture
than would not o therwise
be acquired. Our instructional programs
create a high guide to client ratio.
On summit day, all members of the
program will use their new skills
together, increasing the team’s
chance of success on the mountain.
All members walk away from our courses
with much more than just a climb.
Our courses are an educational, physical,
and cultural experience to the fullest.
This truly is a chance of a lifetime
for all involved with the program!
Social Aspect: Nepalese climbers
are some the strongest athletes in
the world, although many of them lack
the technical skills needed for rescue
and risk assessment within there own
field of work. We at the HGI see this
as a great disadvantage to our people
that has lasted since the first exploration
into the Nepal Himalaya. This situation
is recognized by most Nepali guides
but due to coarse availability and
social constraints, such as putting
food on the table for their family,
proper training is neglected. Our
objective is also to encourage the
local climbers to join courses and
to create more training opportunities.
Currently we are offering three courses
although we are flexible and will
customize a trip that fits your needs.
The climbing courses are all one week
long with two optional days in Kathmandu
for rock climbing instruction and
a complete equipment orientation.
The group then flies/drives (dependent
on trip selection) early the next
day and begins the stunning trek into
the mountains. During the trek we
will cover and review information
along the way. The amount of days
trekking depends on the region you
choose for your trip. A visit to the
aid post of the Himalayan Rescue Association
is also included to learn the skills
necessary to diagnose symptoms for
high altitude sickness from a western
doctor. Once the group has arrived
at the instructional camp alongside
or on the glacier, we immediately
resume instruction. During the following
five days your small group will learn
glacier travel, snow/ice climbing
techniques and protection, crevasse
rescue, map reading, mountain weather,
and hazard evaluation in the mountains.
Once all the necessary skills are
in place it's time to put everything
together and make a summit attempt.
