| The trek for the
climb begins in Lukla where we take
a STOL flight from Kathmandu. From
Lukla, we head south-east cross the
4,600m / 15,000ft. high Zatrawa La
to enter into Hinku Valley and follow
the Hinku Drangka (stream) which gradually
climbs to kharkas (pastures) of Dupishung
and Lungsamba passing Kusum Kanguru
6,369m/20,896ft on our left. Onward,
the valley steepens and our trail
follow the Dig glacier - passing a
glacier lake formed at the foot of
6769m/22,208ft Tang-nag Tse. We stop
here to get more acclimatized and
explore the Hinku glacier and approach
to Kangtega 6,782m/22,244ft and impressive
looking peak which overlooks the Tengpoche
monastery situated on the other side
of the mountain. From Digkharka the
path climbs more steeply to Khare
5099m / 16,729ft - our base camp for
the climb.
From
our base camp at Khare, we climb to
Mera-La 5415m / 17767ft and set up
a high camp. Above Mera la, we climb
to 5800m./ 19028ft and set up another
camp for the summit attempt on the
following day. This camp provides
one of the best view of the Eastern
Himalaya range of Nepal which include
Kanchenjunga, Chamlang, Makalu, Baruntse,
Nuptse, Lhotse, Everest, Cho-Oyu,
Amadablam and Kangtega.
Mera has two prominent summits: the
Central and the Northern Summit. The
Northen summit is the highest one
at 6,476m/21,247ft.which can be reached
by skirting the Central Summit 6,461m
/ 21,247ft. to the north and following
a classic snow ridge to it top.
Technically easy, this climb on Mera
offers outstanding mountain views
of Everest and four other 8000 meter
peaks, not to mention the satisfaction
of reaching over 21,000ft. above sea
level.
